Public Service Announcement (PSA) Introduction
View the following examples of public service announcements. The purpose of a PSA is to educate, to inform, and to generate awareness of an issue. Your group will be responsible for creating a PSA about your assigned genocide. See below for the guidelines and a rubric.
Genocide Awareness PSA
Storyboard
Your group must present a storyboard before creating a PSA. This storyboard should be a play-by-play of exactly what each section of your PSA will include. Laying this information out beforehand will allow you to really think through the process and create a great PSA. Your storyboard should include a script (label speakers, etc.) You can use the script during recording to prevent errors. It should also include the layout of pictures and text. You may use notebook paper, or create a digital copy (only if you plan to print it out.) Here is an example to get you started.
1) Pictures- good quality pictures selected for the purposes of awareness and education. You want to showcase the horrors, but you also want to give a voice to the people subjected to them. Your announcement should begin with pictures of the people involved, and flow through to pictures of the atrocities that the people went through. Each photo choice should in essence speak for itself. Draw your audience in. Give them a reason to care.
2) Message- The delivery of your message can be accomplished in one of two ways: voice or text. If you choose to deliver your message orally, choose a speaker(s) with a clear speaking voice who has a grasp on the seriousness of the task. This is not a comedy routine. If you choose text, you must pay attention to grammar, timing, and appropriateness to task. Your audience must be able to clearly read your message as it moves through a timed video.
3) Length- The requirements for length are as follows: No video should be under 1 minute, and should be no longer than 2 minutes 30 seconds. (Deductions will be applied for videos not meeting these guidelines.)
4) Music- Choice of music should be appropriate to task and purpose. It should be background music, not too loud as to impede spoken message.
5) Include: definition of genocide, statistics from your research (number of deaths, etc.), brief highlights straight from your research.
Trifold__
The trifold is a required part of your presentation. The trifold should showcase the information that you collected independently before beginning the project, which should be synthesized with information from your group members. The best photos, the most thorough information should be selected for the purposes of this trifold.
The sections of the trifold should represent the following categories of information (from your research)
Dates (Beginning and End)
Timeline of Major Events
People Affected (Race or Tribe) Background
Location (you will need a map/photo)
Oppressor(s) (Who is behind the genocide?)
Methods of Genocide (How are they persecuting the people? Detailed information)
Aid (Who, if any, is providing or has provided assistance? Liberation?
End of Conflict (if applicable, how was the conflict resolved? Who was involved, etc.)
All information should be printed in a legible font. Each section should include titles (printed in a larger font).
Presentation
The presentation part of this project will take place in an expo-like setting in the gym. Each group member will participate. Every person in your group should be an "expert" on his/her assigned genocide. Regardless of the role you played in the creating the projects, you should be familiar with all the information collected during the process. Be prepared to answer questions. Your purpose is to educate others and promote awareness of genocide. Knowledge is the only way to prevent genocides from happening in the future. Professional dress will be required for presentation day.
Stay tuned for important dates for checkpoints and rubrics! Remember this is a dual grade- one for English and one for history. It could make or break your last 9 weeks as a Junior!
Driving Question- How can we prevent future genocides from occurring?
